Edwardian Wardrobe Redux

Feels good to get a task finished...

Here's how the master bedroom wardrobes looked when we bought the house (complete with panelled over fireplace):




A lot of wallpaper stripping, gouging, painting and fitting of some reclaimed wardrobes from an identical house down the road, and here we are:




The wardrobe and drawers on the right actually came out of a kitchen, but happily fit the space with exactly the same gap as the left wardrobe (which was from the bedroom in the other house), even though the alcoves are different sizes.

We made the little doors at the top of the left wardrobe, and our shoddy joinery makes them look as worn as the 100+ year old ones...

I would add a panel at the top of both wardrobes, set maybe 1 or 2 inches back from the face of the chimney breast, to fill that inaccessible gap between the top of the cupboards and the ceiling. Paint this in to match. If you leave a gap above furniture, it should be big enough to be usable and cleanable.

Jolly good. My only further thought would be that the composition would be enhanced by a picture rail.

Ugh, spiders. Absolutely the worst thing about living in an old house. August and September are a nightmare for me.

MikeG - I think the angle of the pic makes the gap look smaller than it is. You could get a hat box on the top, though I won't, cos I like seeing the cornice lurking behind.

There was a picture rail in that room. It was removed at some point in the past, but the room was oddly painted in two different colours as if it was still there. I'm considering putting it back...

Lovely job! I can't believe you hit so lucky to pick up the cupboards from another house - even though it was a crying shame they were being ripped out.

P.S. Spiders are lovely! A period house needs them, especially in the cellar! :wink:
