Today, Easter Day, is our Ecological Debt Day. One of the contributory factors is that we import 1.62 million tons of cement each year. And a little hydraulic lime.

I saw that in Staurday's Guardian. Seemed like twaddle mostly.

We are a very densly populated nation, it is hardly THAT surprising that we arent self sufficient. The worse contries than us were Japan and the Netherlands.... Hmm also densly populated countries....

I also think some of the statisitics are being manipulated. We import and export milk and cream to France... But do we buy their excess skimmed milk and they buy our excess cream?
We buy and sell chocolate and cooco products and beans... But are we buying in mainly raw cocobeans and exporting finsihed chocolates? As far as I am aware we dont grow much coco here and it seems like having a chocolate industry that can export stuff is actually pretty good.

We have an ecconomic system based on free trade and we cant really pick and choose. A law to force us to eat our own gingerbread and ban imports seems unworkable to me.

I fully agree that we have way too many frivolous goods being imported by air (like mangetout from africa) which we can surely grow in greenhouses here or bring in by lorry from spain. But timber coming by boat from Scandinavia is a necessity. And if we concentrate on powering such trade by renewable energy then we would do far more good...
