She seems to be following my mouse around the screen... decidely scary - and not unlike the Scooby-Doo monster the kids are watching on the telly just now. (we've done our windy walk for the day, and have decided to brave the chance of CO poisoning, uninsulated flues, and lack of air circulation - and we've lit the woodburner. :shock: )

Our neighbours Son has one, says it isn't pretty but it does circulate the warm air around better. Though as we have no rads working at the moment, I'm just thinking I might drill some holes in the floorboards and let the heat rise into the bedroom.

If you do, please let us know the results. We will be shortly switching on the heat pump which will heat downstairs. We won't have any heating upstairs and will initially rely on the big gap around the edge of the floorboards to let heat from downstairs reach upstairs. If this works OK, we are thinking of using offset vents in the new floor once we fit it. If it doesn't we will have to think again.

I read a full page interview a year or two ago, with someone who was living in a town as ecologically friendly as they could. Their heat came from a wood stove fuelled solely by waste wood they picked up from the neighbourhood. At the end of the interview they were asked what their most useless and best carbon-reducing gadgets were. The answers were a roof mounted wind turbine and the ecofan respectively.

Will do, as the floor will be coming up adn being replaced when we get to this room and it isn't particualrly good wood at teh moment it won't be a great loss to drill holes in it, just got to do something with the carpet as well.

I saw an Ecofan working in a neighbour's house at the weekend. I've wondered about these fans before, but thought they looked a bit ungainly. The hotter these fans get, the faster they spin. Beside the hob cover of the neighbour's Aga/Rayburn/Thing, the fan was spinning gently, but speeded up when placed directly on the hotplate. It gently but fairly efficiently sent warm air six feet into a slightly chilly conservatory, and took the chill off the room.

In principle, I really want one. I just held back because of the price and the look. I'm sure I'll succumb.

Regarding drilling holes in floors... my electrician left some areas round edges of rooms where the ceiling is now missing and the heat can creep up through cracks in floorboards. I did wonder if I could put vents in and heat the upstairs... from downstairs. I decided that it's probably highly illegal, from a fire-safety point of view. (But I'm not exactly rushing to replace the missing bits of ceiling.)

We have a ceiling fan in the same room as our log burner. Worth a try do you think?
