Hi

Mike Wye does really good hands on training days. All the Devon Conservation Officers went and built walls, pointed and plastered for a day. We tried this product and I for one was very impressed. It is very light weight compared to normal lime plaster and easy to apply.

It really depends on your philosophy, but in the area where I work a 1 meter sea height increase will wipe out a third of our towns including many listed buildings and particularly a grade I listed abbey. For that reason I think that this is a good way to improve energy efficiency without compromising breathability.

As far as I can tell it looks like a mix of cork and hydraulic lime. It was this kind of product that inspired me to make my own mix using mainly perlite as aggregate with some sand for strength just for peace of mind really, except I use a 50:50 mix of hydrated and hydraulic lime for the lime part. It is not particularly strong, eg I can gauge a chisel into the plaster after it has been on the wall for a few weeks, but it seems stonger than the very crumbly original render coat in my house. I think any mix like this with hemp, cork, perlite, vermiculite or any lightweight aggregate will work quite well.

Is it okay to use hydraulic lime inside then ? I thought HL was only for external use.

According to product specification, inside use common is ok

Cellar finally finish plastered today!

EcoCork system applied and finished with traditional lime plaster from Mike Wye

Next plan is to clean up brick floor and install lighting

Cellar walls of brick, stone, earth and rubble construction

Before (mainly failed modern plaster finishes)


After EcoCork system applied (3 part)


Today after final application of traditional lime plaster

Would be interested in ideas for lighting which needs to be wall mounted as ceiling only 6' in centre centre.

Apologies for slight hijacking of thread, but that cellar looks very much like ours, though bigger, and we haven't got the recesses in the walls (they are nice - are they meant for wine storage? most wine bins take up far more of the available space). In the 'before' picture it looks as though the area around the extractor fan has been repaired/filled in with newer brick. Is that because there was originally a coal chute there? If so, it's like our cellar, and I was considering blocking the coal chute because it tends to destroy the even temperature that cellars are supposed to maintain - i.e. lots of freezing air comes down it in the winter - but was concerned that this would also make the cellar unventilated.
Choice of lighting depends on whether you are just going to use it for storage or intend to do anything down there - e.g. put in a workbench or something.

Ours is like many I suspect, the "last refuge of stuff that damp won't kill that might be useful one day". Ohh, and a freezer.

Assume it was a coal chute but bricked up bar a small ventilation hole (extractor fan was to remove damp smell and worked very well)

I was told wall recesses were for cheese but would bow to someone in the know

With reference to future use - not a clue yet! Just dont tell my wife after spending best part of 12 months removing spoiled modern materials and re-plastering.

Unlikely to fill with junk and will do my best to prevent my son (4 1/2 years old) taking it over.
