Early 18th Century driveway gate inspiration

Well, it was a cart track to the farmhouse, but tis a drive now.

The gates we have are starting to become more rot than wood. The opening is approx 4.8-5m wide (need to check), between two stone gate posts.

We're struggling to work out what would look best.

The house isn't grand, but is Listed, so we don't want anything too fancy, yet we don't want a typical 5 bar gate either.

Does one go timber or metal (as in Estate Fencing gates)? Two leafs or one?

We've got free range ducks/chickens and dogs, so will need to keep them in.

I'll post some photo's of what we have at the moment when I get chance.

We're just after a bit of inspiration on styles and design really...

How about a horned/bent heel 5 bar, they look very different from a standard 5 bar.. You could get a bent heel and paling gate to keep the animals in although unless you find a nice one the paling can look an afterthought. Wessex gates are another nice style to look at depending on your aspect. We ended up with a very simple 5 bar bent heel in larch.

At that width a single leaf would be a challenge I think, the post taking the bearing weight would have to be massive.

Thanks for the replies so far chaps/chapesses.

The Wessex gate is the sort of thing we had in mind, so thank you for suggesting that one as I didn't know what that style was called!

If we were to head in the metal direction, I was thinking about something along these lines, which is on a farmhouse about a mile away from us:

Would the gates have been timber or wrought iron originally?
