Duff Batch of Cut Nails

I've made three doors now using rose head cut nails and I've been bending the nail ends over and clenching them without any problems. For the forth door, I had run out of nails so got a new batch. Out of these, I've had three nails snap out of the first eight that I've tried. Two of these have snapped when I initially curl the end with pliers before clenching which really doesn't sound right. I'm guessing it is a bad batch of nails that have been made out of too hard a material but it could be just down to my technique. Has anybody else come across this?

That's very frustrating for you, MdB.

I've had the occasional cut nail break like that, but it was usually when I was too enthusiastic about clenching it over. I found that bending the end a little at a time solved the problem.

But if the whole lot are doing it, then - as you say - I reckon you've got a duff batch. Are they from the same source as the earlier ones? If so, I should have a moan at them.

If you've made 3 doors without a problem I doubt it is your technique, I'd have a word with the suppliers.

could be that they need annealed , but a lot of faffing around though.

I totally understand how broken nails can really spoil your day. Sometimes a teensy dab of superglue and careful filing can hold things together until it grows out, other than that it's a gel replacement over the top or live with a short one for a while. All the other advice given here seems very strange, not to say dangerous ( particularly that bit about annealing ) but maybe I somehow misunderstood the problem. Lets hope Joce pops in and can affirm my recommended course of action.

Go back to the supplier. There are two different types of cut nails, one designed to be used straight and one designed to be bent over. If you use the wrong sort they snap when you try bending them.
