Dressing Sandstone?

I've nearly finished the repointing hopefully less than a week to go. But i'm going to have to replace one particularly badly eroded block. Presumably when i get the stone it will be smooth and will need dressing which i'm told isn't too difficult...anyone out there got any tips? thanks
