We have a number of drains within our grounds (6). By flushing various toilets and pouring water down respective drains we have been able to establish the purpose of most of the drains. However, there are three that confuse us somewhat.
Starting from the one furthest away:
1) This is on the land that we own to the side of the house that takes rainwater from the roof of our garage and rainwater from nextdoors house. Having poured water down this we don't see it coming through into any other drain on our land.
2) The drain appears disused - it looks as though it used to be used for rainwater - I'll have to investigate some more but there looks as though there could be a sewer pipe at the very bottom.
3) A further drain inside our garden that accepts rain from our guttering. There are other pipes that look as though they come from (1) but having put water down (1) nothing appears in (3). All the other drains seem to flow into into a drain outside our back door. However, if you put water down (3) nothing appears.
The reason I am interested is twofold. Firstly we are thinking of extending the garage which would mean building close to (1) and (2). Establishing their usage and where they flow would be useful. Secondly we have a damp problem at the side of the house (penetrating damp). Our plans had been to install a French drain however, it would be useful to check that we don't have a cracked pipe adding to the problems.
My question is: who can provide us with the information that we require. Will South West Water be liable as there is a shred drain on our land or is the fact that it is surface water and not sewerage mean that they won't do anything. Or do the Council have sewer and surface water pipes? Or do I have to find a contractor to put cameras down to check stuff?
Not the sexiest posting I know but something that is starting to frustrate me! Thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers
