Draft-reducing curtain

More fittings than building fabric I'm afraid, but thought it was worth a shot. We've got a Victorian two-up, two-down where the front door opens directly into the living room. This is proving a little drafty in the current weather, particular as the draw from the chimmney when we've got a fire going exacerbates the draft (would rather it came from door on other side of room and so didn't have to pass directly across the back of our necks when sat on sofa...).

We're looking for a floor length (not actually that long) heavy curtain, or fabric to make similar, almost like a wall-hanging. Usual recourse to John Lewis furnishings has not yielded any success, so wondered if anyone had any suggestions for shops or, ideally, web sites? Are Surrey/London based.

I found on ebay some vintage french heavy duty curtain/tapestry fabrics/curtains the other day that were perfect for door curtains. there seem to be some specialist suppliers on ebay, and they weren't too expensive considering.

I've already bought a pair of really heavy fully lined curtains (from Oxfam!) and just discovered the technical term (portiere) for the hanging rod that lifts the curtain off the floor when you open the door! Now I've found out what its called I've been able to buy one!

If you wanted new, though, I noticed a local bespoke interior design company did some really beautiful one with all sorts of gorgeous trimmings. When we eventually replace our doors I am looking forward to upgrading my curtains.

you dont say were you are but here in the north west we have abakhan which sells end of line rolls and fabric by weight.

The velvet and lining for my huge door curtains came to less than £30.
If not try ebay, either for curtains or for fabric

Thanks guys, that's given some useful links. I'm down south (Surrey) but sometimes in other areas for work so will have a good look at sites.

Hadn't thought of ebay for fabric - will have to have a good look when I'm not at work. Really useful to know about special curtain rod!

Thought I'd chip in ......a good way to get the portiere rod you want is to contact a Blacksmith or alternatively Jim Lawrences site is good. I have just had some black iron minature portiere rods made that hang either side of a small window enabling me to effectively swing teh curtians backwards and forwards away from teh window recess. Its complicated but my loo is right beside an upstairs window in my 18th C cottage meaning as you descend to the throne the neighbours can get a full size view of your behind as you sink down - so rather than have a bathroom deprived of natural light I decided to have righ angled arm brackets fitted to the window recess so you could effectively just swing them closed as you prepared for ......
