What wood would they have been made of in times gone by?
Would they have been painted? Left bare? treated with linseed or something similar?

We are having an Oak kitchen, should we go for Oak doors as well? Would we be better off going for a soft wood and painting them white as the kitchen is pretty dark as it is? The doors, though, are open most of the time, well apart from the pantry door.

We have three doors to consider, one into the hallway, one into a 1970's utitlity and one into the pantry, next to the utility.

Windows are painted white.

We have one nice plank door, painted white. Should we just copy this?

Should we just go for whatever we like?

I think oak would be nice.
It is probably more original too as oak was a popular door material.
The doors would be even nicer if they were old, strong and stout....
....but to get three doors the same?
..Not much chance.

Nearly all of the original doors (interior and exterior) I've seen here in West Wales have been of close-grained softwood, save for some oak exterior doors on grander buildings

Age varies from the 1400's to the utility which was added in the 1970's.
The kitchen is quite old, but probably not the oldest.
It was built timber framed, but not much of that is left on the outside, but there is plenty on the inside. Not a lot in the kitchen, but plenty upstairs.

We will be doing all the doors as we work round the place.

As for grandeur, I have been told that it would have been quite a grand house back in it's day.

Yes, Biff that is the sort of door we have in mind. The one that is nice is like that but painted white and has small trips of wood covering the joints on the one side and beaded rebates on the other.

The three doors will not be the "same" per se as they will each be different sizes, but as we will be making them in house they can be the same design/material to "match" as closely as you can using wood.

If you are planning to paint the internal plank doors and make them yourself then softwood, as closely grained as you can find, might be easier than oak.

Rosehead nails, for clinching, are an interesting subject. I'd be interested to hear from where other folks who have bought what sort of nails.

You have such a variety of styles and ages of doors, that frankly I think it comes down to what you like! It looks as though most of your doors are planked in some form, while at some stage (Victorian?) someone has decided to smarten up the sitting room by fitting a panelled door.

That being the case, then for the kitchen I think I would fit white-painted, planked softwood doors.

But that's what I would do - it's up to you!
