Doors.... Oversized Doors....

Hi,

I had raised this question previously, but the thread took on it's own life and my question was lost

Issue: Need to find doors to fit my georgian door frames. Apparently, the doors needed are larger than modern door sizes available, approx. 2.1m x .94m.
Problem: I don't have big budgets, nor time.

So, I have contacted Todd Doors, and a bunch of others, and they all say they don't have a size that fits. My builder suggested that we add wood to the doors to make them bigger, but can't imagine if that will look ok? They will be painted, and hopefully, a 6 panel georgian style.

Anyone else come across this issue? I'm stuck!

I don't know how much you're looking to pay, but our carpenter made up the doors for us, to match what was already there. They aren't "oversized", just "differently sized".

I recall something like £100 each (but the file is up in the attic and my memory isn't what it was).

As far as adding to the door is concerned, it's really a matter of proportions. Add too much and it could look odd, but if its only a little bit all round, and its done well, and the door is to be painted, you really won't notice.

The two splendid doors into our (Victorian) sitting room were in such a dire condition that I had to get them right back to the wood* and start again. That's how I discovered that one of them had been enlarged to fit the opening.
I can only imagine that the same earlier owner who had the elaborate cornice and ceiling rose installed in the back half of the room had decided to upgrade the doors and been unable to find a matching pair that fitted the openings.

Agree that if it's just a bit that's added you'll get away with it. Did you put the dimensions into Ebay and see what came up?

I don't think, unfortunately, that entering a search on ebay for doors of a particular size will yield an accurate result. I've been searching for doors on ebay for many months and have found no alternative to trawling through hundreds of listings, checking the sizes individually if I like the look of them, and that's if the sellers even give the sizes!

Not really helping but we are having the opposite problem, our frames in our house are all over the place so we are making doors fit....nothing drastic mind!

Well, it's only me who will live in the flat, so I am going to have to order Todd Doors "Knightsbridge" doors (which is their code for custom) and pay a ridiculous amount. They are not ready for 10weeks or 12 weeks, so I think I will just order and move in without internal doors Seriously. And, building control can't have a problem b/c I won't have installed a kitchen either That will come later. I will keep the original entry doors to the flat (by original, I mean, Wickes they were here. Terribly ugly.

By the way, I came across architecturalforum.com, a store islington, London and they have lots of old doors. The price is about £120, but you have to refurb them of course. I like this idea, so worth looking at, perhaps.

Why? You've been given several good ideas for alternative, money-saving, approaches to your problem in this and - despite your assertion to the contrary - in your previous thread on the subject. I don't understand why you won't pursue them.
