Dog flap flapping

I'm sat 1000ft above sea level in an old property. The easterly wind is howling at the back of the house. The dog flap is blowing open almost horizontally into the room. It's creating a bit of a draft.

It's a standard dog flap for a small dog. Under normal weather conditions it's held shut by magnets for the dog to come and go.

It hasn't been shut much the last few days.

Does anyone know of a dog flap design that might be a little less invigorating? And do building regs apply to dog/cat flaps?

Could you shoot the dog? save a lot of trouble

You can get them with a locking mechanism so you can lock them shut, but dog can't get in or out, or maybe out but not in. Keeps it from flapping about, but you have to get up to let teh dog out.
Other option is the infra red model, which the dog opens with his "key"
Staywell do them.
Also check out Petmate, the other large manufacturer of flaps. But it's been a while since I sold these and never stocked this make.

We have the same problem with our dog flap, when there's a lively westerly wind blowing (which there usually is here!).
Our dog flap has a slide-in inner flap that locks it - hasn't yours got this?

Dog just has to cross her legs until the wind drops!

If yours can get through a std cat flap you could get one with a magnet operation. Dog will wear a smallish magnet on her collar and that will unlock the falp when she goes to come in. See staywell link earleir but look for, I think it's, item 420. Cost around £25/35 but worth it if it's a problem.

Our Border Collie likes to stick her head through ours and bark at the Ducks and Geese, when one comes running at her though she has a habit of retreating quickly and has pulled the door off twice!!!!

I dont suppose anyone knows of a maker of Wooden catflaps? I know I'm not going to be happy cutting a placcy one into a new oak door. Perhaps Biff could start a new range?

The big advantage of clear placcy ones is that the dog can see out, for added enjoyment! Our pooch spends ages just sitting, staring out at the garden. We call it "dog television"!

I was thinking you could stuff David's white furball catflap - should stop the draught.

We used to have a cat that could swing on the door handle and let itself in but it never shut the door behind it.

Thanks for all the advise.

The flap does have an inner plastic sheet that you can use to lock the flap, but it does indeed prevent the dog going in and out. Her mediciation makes her more prone to needing more trips in and out to do her business (including the night), so the flap can't really be locked down.

The idea of putting something on her collar to unlock the flap is a good one, perhaps just in winter.

Can't shoot the pooch - fine by me, but I doubt the wife would agree. And no shotgun license.

I still wonder what the building regs say regarding installing a dog flap. A bit crazy insisting on double glazing in the windows if a socking great hole in the door is peachy perfect.
