I travelled to Seven Sisters Tube station in London on Monday to collect a shower valve I'd won on eBay. The place has changed considerably since I was a kid as my parents and grandparents come from North London. I got chatting to the couple I purchased the valve from, just round the corner from the station. They're still waiting for the area to 'gentrify'and yet the 3 bed victorian terrace opposite them had just sold for something similar to the above.

I'm always disappointed looking at pictures of the bathrooms and kitchens of lovely restored period houses. They always look so plain and dowdy compared with the attention to period detail given to the rest of the house - fireplaces, architrave, door panelling, etc.
It often seems to me that they betray the suspicion that the restorers are not really interested in the periodness of the house as in the recreation of something that in fact is a very modern interpretation of "period living", suitable for entry in a glossy magazine.

I browsed through the photos of this house, wanting to exclaim "wow!" at every one, until I got to the kitchen and bathroom, and only thought, "Oh dear".

It's a difficult one. Do the owners install a pastiche of a Victorian servants kitchen with cast iron range? Do they then bath once per week in the kitchen in a tin bath of water heated from the range for full authenticity? Do then employ servants to use this contraption? I can’t image living in a museum or employing servants is practical for most people. Rather the designs reflect the current use of these areas. The kitchens were for the staff, so they were utilitarian. Nowadays most people cook for themselves and have another job. So they need a quick end efficient way to cook and eat. A coal fired range is not practical. I imagine the Victorians who built that house thought that their interiors were the height of fashion and cutting edge. Bathrooms in Victorian times were completely utilitarian. The house is so old, there were likely no original plumbed bathrooms. So everything is a new addition in that sense. I do agree that the most of the interior is not to my taste either.

It’s to bad the exterior charm and period features bon’t extend into the interiors. Kind of let’s me down, all that white paint with no nod to what a grand interior there was.
