Given the supposed sensitivity of forensic DNA analysis these days, it might be a bit of a shock if processed meat products for human DNA. It would only take one bit of hair or worse . . . :shock: Mind you, I've never been a big fan of processed meat.

Many years ago, I briefly worked at the medical research council. Among other things, my research supervisor went on to become an advisor to the government BSE enquiry, so when the crisis broke soon after FF junior wa born, I contacted her to find out her views about the safety of eating beef.

Her basic comment was that it's not the meat you can recognise that's the problem, it's the meat you can't recognise or sometimes can't even see you that should worry about.

Zebra steaks! That is a rather worrying thought. But it does say in that article that they only take stallions, so as a mare I should be quite safe. I suppose if I were living on the savannah, and a hunter with a gun came along, I'd just have to pull my trousers down and flash them.

We have a few farms out here that advertise rare breed pork and other rare meats, what I fail to understand is if the animals are so rare why kill them in the first place?
Wont that make them even rarer?

'Rare' breeds are usually only rare because they have become commercially unviable, so apart from a few enthusiasts no body keeps them anymore, hence their rarity. But if they can be made more popular, there is more demand, so more people breed then and their numbers increase.

I don't think many breeds become rare because they've all been eaten.
