Do I need to line the chimney ?

Hi there

I need advice on whether or not to line our chimneys when installing
multi fuel stoves.
The internal and external walls have been repaired and pointed using
lime, I'm confident of there being little or no danger, but in any case we could buy monitors.
So, do we go to the huge expense of lining, and if we do should we then infill around the metal liners to reduce condensation etc...can we get away with having the liner on it's own going up the chimney?

Any advice would be very welcome.

I would not hesitate to to use double sleeved flexible stainless steel liner, as long as it is of the right diameter for the application.

Check building regs - I believe you now have to fit a liner, and there are regs regarding hearths also.

Yep.

Building regs stronlgy recommend a liner. They are not that expensive (£20/meter). I wouldnt bother to fill around it. register plate at the bottom (fireproof boarding - available from builders merchants. minimum size of liner is 6" if you want to burn wood, but no smaller than the stove output.

We made up a metal frame to attach to the walls of the chimney (at the part where it narrowed above the gathers) and fitted the register plate on that. It was easy then to fill round with fireproof gunge.

Some method of access for sweeping needs to be considered. We have access via the metal flue pipe leading from the stove.
