Is there a genuine reason to use them? The only difference I can see is IR will give more variation and less control over the temp the paint reaches. And I dont see how thats an advantage.

Dunno, he made it after using a one costing $400 which he thought was terrific - Viking I think the make was - so made one as it was cheaper..

You could make one and try it...

I haven't - although I think that these are available for removal of old putty to allow undamaged removal and re-puttying of historic glass?

This is the Alback putty lamp, as sold by Holkham Paints, being demonstrated by Roger Mears at the SPAB Historic Plain Glazing day at Avoncroft Museum last Monday. 19th century cylinder glass was successfully removed from an old frame with very hard putty. Without the lamp softening the putty it would have been very difficult to save this historic glass.

i'm surprised they don't also market one for paint - especially seeing as they don't recommend applying their paints over wood that has been chemically stripped...

I'm not sure that the IR putty lamp really delivers enough heat for a paint stripper. The object is to deliver just enough heat, very evenly, to soften the putty without cracking the glass.

Has anybody thought of a controllable industrial microwave oven for all sorts of DIY stripping yet ? .

Someone raised that, Middi, at the SPAB meeting. Two issues: safety, the microwaves in a cooker are enclosed in a microwave-proof box; and whether it works - microwaves heat up water molecules in food but that doesn't mean they have the same effect on paint.

Does the remover gadget only remove infra-red paint, or will it work on ordinary paint, too?
