About 4 months ago I decided to start removing the artex from the kitchen walls. Under the artex was a layer of oxblood red gloss paint, below that a layer of brown varnish type stuff and below that a layer of, very dark green distemper. I tried washing it off, soaking it then scrubbing it gently with a nylon pan scourer but it didn't seem to have that much effect. I looked through my copy of The Old House Handbook which said to try wallpaper stripper, this helped a bit but stained the limeplaster underneath, green. I have been sulking ever since and just trying to wash it off every so often ever since. Yesterday I decided to have another go and sprayed it with overcleaner because I remember my niece stripping the numbers around the dials on her new cooker, accidently, with Fairy Power Spray (not wishing to advertise). So I sprayed a tiny bit on the wall, left it for 15 mins, washed it off and it had worked. It didnt damage the plaster but took all the distemper off and even managed to get the green stain out of the old plaster. I have now stripped the whole wall. It also works with Mr Muscle oven cleaner because I tried that too.
I hope this helps somebody else on here, as every time I looked at the wall, I thought that it would be quicker to drill all the old plaster off and replaster .
