Display cabinet

Last week I bought a display cabinet. It's beautiful. The work that went into it is amazing. It cost me £128. Out of curiosity I decided to look at modern versions. Really plain ones made out of nondescript woods go for 3 to 4 times what I paid for mine. It would cost more than I paid for the whole piece just to replace the glass.

I was actually looking for a Welsh Dresser. It needs to be under 193cms high to fit under the ceiling. And no "Annie Sloan" / "Farrow & Ball" paint jobs. £30 quid of paint to ruin a lovely piece of furniture and add £300 to it. (apologies to anyone who has painted theirs).

Don't forget that lots of old furniture would have been painted originally. What you think of as faux paint jobs might actually be closer to the original than is the stripped down version.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that by "the amount of work that's gone into it" there will be some amount of marquetry involved. In which case anyone considering painting over such craftsmanship should instead place their own head in a bucket of Annie Sloan while they rethink their position. only my extremely humble opinion, of course.

I know pine furniture would most likely have been painted, but often these day mahogany oak and walnut pieces are also painted. I know as I have seen a number of pieces that I would have bought if they hadn't been painted.
