In the loft space in an 1840 building, the bricks to the side of the chimney breast seem to be disintegrating. there is e heap of brick dust below them. They don't seem to be damp. Does anyone know what could be the cause and an eventual remedy?
The cause is a lack of quality control and temperature management in the kiln - the bricks are under-fired. Complain to the manufacturer (could require a seance).
The remedy is to cut out the offending brick and insert replacements. But I wouldn't bother unless the damage is very bad to a large proportion of the bricks. From the pictures it doesn't look too serious yet.
I agree with biffvernon.
The bricks are not bad enough to need replacing.
Perhaps the bricks were wet at some time in the past.
However I'd brush down the bricks and remove the dust on the ceiling.
If there was a leak in the roof a pile of brick dust would hold the moisture on the ceiling, laths etc.
It looks to me that when the cement repairs were done towards the top of the first picture the bricks were scraped out and the pile of dust left behind.
