Direct glazing to stone

Does anyone have any bright ideas for reglazing a stone mullioned window where the panes are direct glazed into slots in the stone frames? They are whole single panes, not leaded, and although there are signs of the perimeters of the stonework being cut away and subsequently filled with mortar, the extent of cutting doesn't seem to be sufficient to have enabled the panes to have been manouevred in. Some panes are cracked and need replacing.

Assuming the building is not a church, in which case some miraculous divine intervention may be invoked, the stone must have been cut away sufficinetly to allow the insertion of the glass. I suggest you finnish off breaking one of the cracked panes to investigate the real shape of the rebate. There may have been some lime mortar used as if it were putty, giving the appearance of stone. It's probably best to bed the new glass in putty and then finnish with a fillet of lime putty. Don't rush into using ordinary float glass - there are much nicer alternatives. Maybe you could post a photo here before you do anything too destructive?

I have worked on one of these recently, albeit to a chapel. The slots cut into the mullions were set so that one was deeper than the other. At first glance it appeared as though the glass was too large. To re-glaze you had to remove the mortar capping, work the glass into the deeper slot and then move it back into the less deep slot. Don't know if this is standard practice, but I hadn't seen it before. Hope that it is useful though.

I would try to incoporate a soft edge gasket around the edge of the glass, so it can expand when it gets hot and not crack. Cement and lime etch glass so they can bond to it very well.

That's what the putty's for and it makes it more watertight.
