Dining room floor

Hooray!!

Following advice from the forum, we decided to have our dining room floor sanded & polished. We retained the services of another PPUK member (Toby Newell) who often advises on similar threads and has contributed articles on wood finishing etc. Toby and his colleague Benji have been staying with us for the past 3 days (dearth of acceptable accomodation in this part of Norfolk) and have done a fantastic job.

I'm going to gloat in a great big fat "I told you so" - that looks better than any modern floor could, plus you've celebrated the old fabric of the house, plus you've supported a traditional craftsman. Fantastic all round.

Actually, I was leaning in to the room trying not to step on the floor (which is still drying)

It was also recorded with a tiny camera (Flip camera) which seems very prone to the shakes in comparison to a decent camera

You need to ask for your money back, in some of that video they've clearly stuck your floorboards to the wall.

How much do I owe you? Thanks again for your hospitality. I would be grateful if you could take some pictures and send them to me before you move the furniture in as obviously we had the same problem as you, we couldn't walk on it. It should be okay now though. I think it did come out particularly nice, especially pleased about the colour matching. The hallway should come out like the pitch pine at the double door end of the room.

Your floor looked nice, just different, but I agree, one inch thick 200 year old boards that have moved several inches up and down with the house over the centuries will last several times longer than a modern floor and the finish I apply is several hundred percent more durable than the factory applied finishes, actually it wouldnt have been possible to lay a new floor over the top without removing all of the boards and adjusting all the joists, 99.9% of contractors would have got round this by bonding the floor to the boards with obvious consequences. We put over an extra 1,000 nails into the floor before we started sanding but the floor is very firm now probably due to the fact that many of the joists were replaced at some point and the floor were very thick. To anyone else, please keep your old floors they are 100 times more durable/beautiful/environmentally responsible than modern floors.
