We are currently doing up our house and i am having a dilema about the flooring we should use in our kitchen - we have seen and love flagstones from Tim Stoneham but people are advising us that stone is really hard going and less a forgiving surface to live with (we are having a baby soon!) and have said that wood is better for all sorts of reasons. we have walnut work surfaces and have been told that you should really try and match the floor with the surfaces. i have seen a nice walnut parquet but think this maybe too dark. I would love some advice on the pros and cons of each - many thanks

We had flagstones in part of our house in Oxfordshire. They're attractive, durable, easy to keep clean (provided they've been properly treated) and bl**dy hard when you drop anything on them (like a glass, a baby... etc).
However, you may want to consider the appropriateness of each floor to your house. Where are you located, and what is the age/construction of the place? I'm not trying to be excessively purist, but - for example - a flagstone floor in my modest Suffolk dwelling would be inappropriate, because we're a long way from any source of stone, and the house would not have been in habited by anyone wealthy enough to import it from other parts of the country.

We've used slate tiles in our 17th century kitchen, and they're actually quite warm and non-slip! came from 'stonell', and aren't too expensive. Look really great and are quite easy to keep clean!
