I was busy writing year 10 reports tonight when I was woken by a dull rumble, as if a heavy lorry was passing outside. It got stronger, the doors rattled in their frames, ornaments bounced in the cabinet and it felt for a few seconds as if the whole place was going to come down. A quick check of the ceiling revealed several large cracks, and the central wooden beam in the kitchen has a split across the middle, so fortunately it doesn't look like the quake has caused any damage. When daylight comes we'll see how the slates are doing. Did anyone else feel it too?

Certainly felt it here in Hellifield, decided to sleep in the newly delivered tester bed last night. Woke up and thought it must have come with a ghost or the floor couldn't hold the weight Must look for cracks outside later.

Woke us up - a lot of shaking and rattling of furniture but no real damage. All the pheasants woke up - they roost high up in thin swaying branches so must have been able to feel something more than usual wind movement.

I think they've got the Lat/Long and one of the Grid coordinates wrong (unless it's been ammended by now).

Description and map suggests about Kirmond le Mire on the Chalk Wolds, but 5km down is in the older rocks below, Lower Palaeozoic or pre-Cambrian.

Just heard on Radio Lincolnshire someone phoning in to report some damage to the church in Market Rasen, undoing the conservation work that is being done.

I was woken up in the middle of the night by a feeling that someone was bouncing on my bed, and the door was rattling. Nothing alarming, but if I'd been superstitious I would have put it down to a Presence.

We frequently have something which causes a loud bang - as though all the house doors are slamming shut at once - and everything shakes. Have not yet fathomed out what causes it - maybe we are suffering earthquakes more frequently then the rest of the country?

Rattled the empties in the kitchen, nearly threw me off the sofa (I was just off to bed). Earthquake or DTs? I wondered to myself. Relieved to hear the news this morning and realise I don't have a drink problem. :shock:

I felt it here in Liverpool. I too thought we had some kind of sofa shaking ghost, but then i convinced myself it must have just been the last train going past. I went off to bed grumpily muttering about the ridiculous speed of trains and the inconsideration of the rail networks. :roll:

I slept right through it, but we've had a troublesome few days and I needed the sleep.
Saturday morning we had a Jack Russell and Brown Lab chasing the chickens, they got one who suffered a nasty couple of bites, but is recovering well in the (non) Kitchen, then just as the hens were going to bed last night they got attacked by a fox, and we lost the Cockrel and two hens.

Well well well Moo, are you sure?!!

JDP thought he was back on the high seas again, I thought that I am so stressed out at the moment that's why I felt 'all shook up', most of the dogs in the village barked, but not our two, they snored their way through.

The house seems ok though, and the Friary wall stands as firm as ever, pretty good after 700 odd years.

ESSEX EARTHQUAKE APPEAL;



according to the BBC an appeal has been launched for those in essex affected by last nights earthquake.
items wanted are reebock trainers,gucci jeans ,adidas tracksuit bottoms(white only),cheapy argos jewelry,and condoms as the essex girls are expecting an influx of emergency workers and troops.
Also food stuffs are urgently required,pot noodles,chocolate,frozen chips and value sausages.
A number of women have been left traumatized as 17 year old chantelle explained " i dunno what appened the hole council flat shook,my 2 kids were scared and came running into my room,them was shittin it brooklyn is only4 an beckam is only 2.all my make up is ruined when it fell off the shelf in the bathroom and i cant find me hash anywhere!"

I was sitting down when suddenly it felt as if my chair had been hit by a wave.
An up and down motion at the same time a tilting so that it felt as if the floor had given way behind me.
For a moment I thought my son had crept in behind me and was shaking the chair.
Then directly after that there was a substantial to and fro motion NE-SW for at least 10 seconds maybe more.
It was quite quiet, the only thing I could hear was the creaking, rattling and shaking of the house moving back and forth with the tinkle of china in the cabinets and ornaments together with the old bells swinging and slightly ringing.
I could see everything was moving.
I got up and went to the door and by that time my family were coming downstairs with the house still shaking having been woken up.
It was like being on top of a jelly (or at least how I imagine it to be).

Surprisingly no damage was done.

Daylight revealed this.

I don't know whether to feel annoyed that Lincs is now a quake zone, or thankful that the pot got stuck before heading towards my son's bedroom. A nice man from the fire brigade was happy to take a look - the end stack has partly separated from the other two and will need making safe and then rebuilding, but it doesn't warrant emergency action. In the meantime we have changed sleeping arrangements. This chimney had been rebuilt in the 1970's using cement; the stack at the end of the house constructed with lime mortar survived unscathed.
There are a few more cracks in some of the upstairs ceilings, but they are due for repair anyway. Other damage was centred on the back staircase. A strange split occurred in a wood panel

On the positive side, some old cement render has started to crack and remove itself without the need of a hammer, while the new lime to the left is once again untouched.

The last discovery was in the bathroom cupboard, where an earthly hand has rearranged all the bottles.

We have also had a few cracked windows, which means an order for Tatras glass. We're waiting now for the loss adjustor to have a look.

Well at least you are all OK - and the damage isn't good but repairable. And of course a testimony to using lime and not cement. :wink:

Let's hope it was a once in a lifetime experience. The quake didn't reach us - or at least if it did I hadn't notivced - but we have been suffering from gale force winds which have been making windows rattle and bang and were strong enough to overturn a very hefty wooden garden seat, so even if we had had a few tremors I' think I would have thought it was down to that.
