Diagonals........HELP!

I've measured the diagonals and discovered that they're about 3cm out.

How on hearth do I translate that into a scale diagram of the window?

Is this for a drawing so that someone can make you a window to fit or the like and that your window frame is wonky?

If so, they should be happy with a drawing with 6 measurements on it:- Width at very top, width at very bottom, height on left, height on right, 2 x diagonals.

If you post these figures here, I or someone else should be able to tell you exactly how wonky the window is (and how accurate your measurements are).

Don't panic 3 cm isn't that bad! One of my windows was 5 cm out on the horiztontal!

Measure all the sides, then measure the diagonals. Have a cup of tea. Measure all the diagonals and then the sides again. If you've ended up with the same measurements twice then good on you, if not try again!.
Also use a large set square or a rectangular bit of A4 card to look for proper right angles at any corner.
Also make a note of how thick the frames are - you may end up with a proper rectangle that fits the wonky space.
If you can supply the measurements accurately and ideally identify a real right angle, your plastic cutter should be able to do the rest.

If the window is quite large then I would take central measurements too in case it bows in or out slightly.

If that isn't possible - or you're really not sure - then find some cardboard big enough and cut a template - starting too big and trimming carefully until you get a good fit - don't forget to mark the orientation of the template. Glaziers end up templating really awkward spaces as it's not always possible to measure well enough - they also sometimes get it wrong.

A good long time ago I measured and ordered half a dozen windows for a refurb I was doing. Five fitted and one did not. Queried it with the joiner – it turned out that my measurements were wrong. I had to swallow the cost of a new one.
“ Why don’t you roughly measure for my firm to price and then leave the real measuring to me ?” he said “ I do it every day…..”.
So I did from then on.

Oh and BTW , centimetres are not used in the trade, only metres and millimetres…..for some esoteric reason they are not in the ISO system of measurement.
Not really too sure why this is - does anybody know ?

Having been educated just after the decimal system came in, it does seem odd that schools teach cm but engineering is mm, m and km.

Glaziers measured up for the vinery - to supply to us to fit.
There are 4 identical non-opening windows and 3 identical opening ones along the wall.
They delivered all but one the right size - the label said 1100mm wide, but it was actually 1010mm wide.
My builders told me they'd worked with most of the local glazing manufacturers on a variety of barn conversions and in every case at least one unit would either be mismeasured or miscut - professionals eh?

Still if your joiner/glazier will accept the liability for mismeasurement then I would always take them up on it!

Factors beyond my control put the kybosh on window things yesterday, but I'm now in the process of creating a template with the aid of strong brown paper and a lot of drawing pins and sticky-tape.
With any luck I should be making the trip to Mr Plastic immediately after lunch.

Actually, Joss, the thought did cross my mind. But John, whose Engineering degree trumps my very shaky O-level maths, pointed out that what we'd save on heating would be more than cancelled out by the need to have the lights on all day.

One thing I've learned, though, is that our windows and frames are made of very hard wood indeed and that trip to purchase drawing-pins was a total waste of time. I ended up having to fix the three large pieces of paper in place with sticky tape, which kept coming unstuck.
Anyway, it's lying on the table now, all marked up (and, my word, that window really is out-of-true!) and ready for the journey to Mr Plastic.
