Demolition of thatched property at Wentworth

Set the hound dogs on this one - A friend of mine has just emailed me to say that this house is going to be demolished to make way for a multi million pound house with underground carpark etc right next to Wentworth golf club. I cannot believe that anyone could do it. Surely a place like this is listed, and if not, should be?????

Wentworth - that was where the Grade II listed Greenside was demolished. With council consent. However, the owner did so before that bizarre decision was ratified by the Gov Office, and after an Inquiry it ws decided that as this is now open space the local plan won't allow a new building in its place.

Is the house pictured listed?

In a Conservation Area? On a local list?

It may not be as old as it first appears. Sadly, there is no law to prevent demolition if it isn't listed, and I suspect it's not listable.

Homes such as Hollow Lane House, a brick and half-timbered thatched house built in the 1930s on the Wentworth Estate at Virginia Water, Surrey, boasts a butler’s pantry off the main kitchen, separate larder, wine cellar, log store and drying room. The house has a slight look of Lutyens about it. I'm not suggesting it is (I guess someone would have mentioned that!), but it's nicely proportioned and on a human scale.

What a shame to demolish it and build a gin palace with a car lift, for crying out loud! :shock:

No. 12 is the perspective view of the place - about the size of Hadzor Hall - big enough to be a hotel...

So - a concrete house, with a flat roof (in this climate?), six reception rooms, all that basement space, and only four bedrooms.
Excuse me while I go and lie down until my mind stops boggling.

I can't see a concrete house with a flat roof - I see a large classical style building in the plans. The amount of concrete used is a little hard to determine from the application. The roof is a parapet, it seems, not totally flat.

The idea of the underground parking I think is actually quite a reasonable one - it avoids cars being parked and cluttering the area around the house, and does provide some security.

Demolition of a cottage pastiche, replacement with a classical one?

Sad in terms of sustainabilty I appreciate, but it's happening everywhere where there is a plot of land and a house on it in a desirable area.
