Saw this on the news the othernight anybody else see it.

A property developer demolished Angel Cottage Grade 2 listed built 1862 in Windmill lane Newham East London he bought it for £400,000.

3. It's London, it's the edge of the Olympic site, he'll get a slap on the wrist at best (unless the Quinlan Terry case recently discussed here - which does seem to have been a bit of a mistake but led to a £25000 fine - is remembered as this one seems far more blatant)

Yes, nice site, block of flats on it will make a pile of cash.

I do hope that they make him rebuild it, but of course it probably then is a candidate for delisting.

Yes, once it's gone it's gone forever. A replica would be some consolation to the locals, and a good expensive punishment.

Can't see it on past evidence though.

It seems the legislation protecting listed buildings is just a joke; developers know that they can get away with it, so they just carry on knocking em down.....same with trees. The fines mean nothing to them because they've got stacks of money. And as you say, you can't really rebuild them, they're never the same again afterwards.
The Olympics will rapidly become a distant memory, after its all over; quick-fix injection of adrenalin for the mass populus and then they'll be on to the "next big thing". They'll probably even forget what was knocked down; if they ever knew in the first place.

The thing which really annoys about the Olympics (well Ok one of many, including the diversion of so much Lottery heritage/culture funding) is the claim that it will 'regenerate' a large area.

So why did we need an Olympics to do this?
