I'm thinking of trying this as the old windows which were repainted last summer are already peeling. Looking at the blurb, I'm a bit confused - is this a paint or a woodstain? Could I use it on top of old gloss (where sound) would I need an undercoat? If so which one? Or should I just use a primer as it will be a combination of filler, wood and paint?

I bought this for our windows. They also make primers, but the Windows

is a solid colour, applied over Visir primer

preferably starting with bare wood. For this purpose the term 'bare wood' shall be deemed to include suitable filler.

Note that the drying time for the top coat - 3-4 coats needed - is pretty fast, but the primer takes up to three days depending on temperature.

I'll be burning off, applying two-pack filler, then starting from scratch.

If your windows are south facing, light colours will last longer.

I've just started using it for my doors and windows. I've been using the Visir pigmented primer.

It's not very nice stuff to work with so I hope it's as good as it says.

You get an opaque but fairly matt finish.

Just to add to the OP, if it's peeling then the preparation was inadequate. More thorough sanding needed, degrease with white spirit if near traffic or airport, sugar soap and rinse, dust off.

If cracking is to be avoided it should not be applied over old oil paint. Oil can be applied over oil, but I wouldn't apply water over oil as the coefficient of expansion is different and durability and adhesion may be poor.

Mind you, one will always get some cracking at the joints, especially to the south. The sun is a great destroyer.

A further note; the Visir primer is liquid, as in water. If working overhead, it runs merrily down the brush handle and then down your arm. Hmm.

The Visir must not be applied over linseed. As in fresh putty. Hmm, again.
I called the supplier, who agreed that it is not compatible with fresh putty. He advised that over the putty, I use the topcoat as a primer, thinned 10% with water. So I will.

Starting the top coat today.
Having said that I wouldn't apply water over oil, that is exactly what I am doing. Old oil on the Critall frames and the old putty therein, and new oil because the Visir is an oil primer.
It was all much simpler in the old days.
