Decorating in the Attic

Hi all,

Been a while since we've been on - but ready to get going again with our 17th century timbered cottage.

Next to do are the attic rooms. Here's some pics of the smaller one, which is going to be a nursery for the new little man. At the moment the walls are white, and as you can see the bean are a piney colour - thanks to previous owner using a sandblaster i think. Anyhow now its time to repaint, new curtains, new carpet and all fit for a baby boy.

Just wonder how other have dealt with open vaulted type ceilings. Keep them white between rafters and colour below? I think id like some colour in the room, so maybe just below slopes. Anyone have a favourite f&b blue?

Oh, i'll post some pics of the bigger attic room too. i know you all love pictures...

Lovely room; what a lucky little man!

When FF jnr was in his nursery phase, we livened up the plain walls with large paste-on prints of winnie-the-pooh and Jungle Book characters. Your panels would easily lend themselves to some contrasting colours though.

I doubt little-man will care too much about what you finally decide but I think the important thing is to introduce plenty of visual stimulation. Those beams already give you a head-start in that respect!

It's funny you mention visual stimulation and beams - when he's awake he stares up at them constantly (everywhere else they're a medium brown stain against white panels). It's like he's in a daze- high on milk and enjoying the visuals. I think its the contrast as for the first few weeks all they can see is pretty much shades of grey.

By contrasting colours in the attic room do you mean one colour between beams and one colour below the purlins?

Your preference really. Use the purlin to split two colours horizontally or the rafters to split two (or more) colours vertically. Or a combination. Or more than two colours.

I'd say the specific decor should be to your particular taste (because little-man probably hasn't developed his own yet :wink: ) but with enough variation of shades and colours to give little-man's vision something to work on.

But I'm certainly not up-to-date with the latest thinking on child rearing so for all I know sensory-deprivation under a UV sunbed might be the current fad.* :lol:

Ahh, the room is as cute as a button! How lovely it will be for a baby. I've got a room like that - the previous owner has painted it a faint pink between the beams - not nice. I would say go for something like Tallow or Joa's White between the beams (F & B), and blue on the vertical wall sections. I'd then add interest with lots of colourful soft furnishings - like this: http://www.cathkidston.co.uk/p-11649-circus-elephants-cotton-duck-nu-blue.aspx, contrasted with this http://www.cathkidston.co.uk/p-11683-cath-kidston-spot-fabric.aspx in bunting and bedding. And a nice red carpet on the floor for warmth.

Here are some F & B blues - I must say softer and nicer in reality than they appear here.

This is "Skylight" against "Tallow"- there's a very slight mauviness in this blue, but it's very easy to live with.

This is "Light Blue"-more grey:

Lulworth blue looks nice, a very definite blue. Good luck, we'd love to see pics of it finished!

Aww what a lucky little ducky!!
Personally having young children myself and knowing what an expensive time it is i would steer away from the child like prints on fabrics etc and go for a plain, a stripe or a gingham style.. paint the walls plain and add in the character etc with accessories that way as your little one grows its just a case of changing accessories and bedding rather than curtains etc as well which can be rather expensive to change .
bunting is a great idea as Joce suggested my little boy has the Laura Ashley pale blue stars/stripes style bedroom but i have been very careful to give him plain walls etc so i am not either redecorating or buying new curtains next year when he decides he no longer likes them!
Red white and blue is always a good way to go because it allows warmth and tranquility for rest at the same time in a bedroom
whichever you decide we want pictures when its finished !!
I will try to get one posted on here of my little boys room to give you an idea of what i mean

Yes, I agree - I make everything - which allows for a certain freedom in revamping over as your whims change! So expensive to get curtains made up.

Its been a long time since i made curtains but i will be for here i think basically because i know what i want and how to get it but dont want to waste thousands on getting them made up when i know i can do exactly what i want for a fraction of the cost... when doing other peoples homes etc it doesnt matter its not my money!

to be honest it was a rush job it was done in one day the day we moved in just to give him somewhere to escape the chaos! I will redo it properly for him when i can but its fine for now

Well thank you for showing off all your offspring's immaculately clean and tidy bedrooms and destroying my delusion that childrens' bedrooms are always a complete mess. I shall give FF jr a good thrashing when he gets home from school tonight and make him spend the entire weekend cleaning and tidying.

Ozzys room can be an absolute tip at times but luckily as its tiny and he is awaiting his new bed he is being on his best behaviour for a change !!

Anyway, it wouldn't really have been fair to thrash FF jnr and not Mrs FF as well because I'm convinced it's an inherited trait from that side of the family. :wink:

thanks all for you advice. I don't know about mess and kiddies rooms yet, but if his parents are anything to go by it's going to be a bomb site.

Think we're going to go with a light sky blue below purlins and on verticals with an off white between rafters.

Mrs. Chapel will be getting the sewing machine out too for curtains!
