Does it really sound loud? I've never heard a deathwatch beetle (I'm glad to say!) - is it really a noise you can hear??? How annoying!

For sheer annoyance you can't beat house crickets that chirp away at night, always stop when you get out of bed to mash them with a slipper, then start up again when you get back into bed! Although at least they don't eat the house!yamin said:

Well there we are back on topic! 
Well, it's certainly loud enough that once you know the sound, and once you know that the sound equates to a bit more of your 500 year old oak beams being eaten, then you become very attuned to it! It was particularly bad today in a bit of wall that has been covered over with plasterboard. I think that was acting as a bit of a sounding board and amplifying the volume.

So how do you deal with it? If they make that much noise, surely they must be big enough to bop on the head when they come out to nick supplies from your pantry? :? Is this an area where one has to bow to rentokil?

Does it help if you reverse it and reassure yourself that at least when they are making a noise, they are off looking for a mate and not actively munching nor actively mating? Its when all is silent again that trouble is happening!Me! said:

Considering the fear it evokes, and its prevalence, I think it most odd that I can only find two poems that treat the death-watch. One is too awful to link to, and even this one I'm afraid I can only give a B-
