Well done - a nice little progression of answers to get to the truth that the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister is dead, long live the Department for Communities and Local Government.

They have a new web presence:

The Planning Portal and DCLG itself, from whence I nicked the picture of Roof.

These websites promise to be useful sources for the likes of us, though they seem to be something of a work in progress. There's an interesting sounding paper entitled 'Tree Roots in the Built Environment' but clicking the link just take you to the page with the Kelly pic and not a tree root on site.

I couldn't readily see your way to get to the paper, so I just did a search for tree roots and the first link goes direct to this page

Following my notification to the DCLG that their link to a book on tree roots in the built environment, took one to a picture of Ruth Kelly, they have corrected the faulty link and thanked me for my trouble. Well done the DCLG.

Pity the book's so expensive - it sounds a gripping read.

I can't help feeling that it would be more appropriate for them to publish something on building in a tree-root environment - one of the curses of our age.

Spare the trees and build on derelict land, I say.

I got this message from DCLG today, in reponse to my query why the tree root document was not available online:

This was published on behalf of DCLG by The Staionery Office Limited. The structure and nature of the publication are such that it is not available in that way at the moment, but I have copied your enquiry to TSO for information.

I wonder what aspects of its 'structure and nature' prevent its publication as a pdf file. Maybe it's a pop-up book with cardboard models of trees and their roots that stick out when you open the book.

I'm not best pleased with trees and their roots at the moment having just had a very nasty encounter with one which took a perfectly normal looking house foundation from 1m deep to 2.5m deep.

Maybe your firm has shelled out the 47 quid for the book, Johneds? I seem to be having an ongoing email discussion with DCLG as to why they haven't put it on line. The latest message read:

I would be happy to discuss this with you if you are able to provide a telephone number on which I can contact you. The basis of your initial request was not clear, but with that detail we will see if we can progress this for you.

I await the call.

I suspect it isn't in pdf format at present, and would need scanning/re-typing....

No way - nothing goes to a printer these days that isn't already in an electronic medium. I'm sure it won't need retyping.
