Whilst you're all considering your responses to my other question, I wonder if anyone has an authoritative source for the dating of nails? I am regularly puzzled by finding dissimilar nails in old bit of oak in my cottage, in that I'll find a round wire nail in the same piece of wood as hand-made cut nails. For instance, all the laths have been nailed on with hand made nails, but some of the bits of scrap wood that the laths are nailed to have been fixed onto studs with round wire nails, but those posts are nailed into place with cut nails. All a little confusing, so I'm after some reading material on the subject.

Round wire was only created post 1890 I belive so there's one dating threshold that can be applied

The Tools and Trades History society http://taths.org.uk could help you in your quest. There is a gentleman there who has an enormous collection of nails and is acknowledged as an expert on them. His name escapes me at the moment as does the article about him which appeared in a newsletter lately.
The Society has aims that go hand in hand with period property owners and is well worth the subscription fee of £30 a year is well worth it for the well produced newsletters and journal alone...

Suffolk County Library 'deep store' has an excellent book on the subject. Sorry I can't remember what it is called.
