I'm well in refurbishment of my stone / brick cottage and almost at the stage of thinking about reinstating plasterwork.
I’ve removed the original plaster and cement renders from the inside walls and have sought advice from various experts on plastering, damp control and lime.
Whilst I was going to go down the lime plaster route, I have been informed by several experts that whilst this is the right approach, one thing you cannot guarantee with lime is that the walls will remain free of staining or salt staining and on the basis that I’m spending a bucket full of money on this refurbishment (much more that I originally budgeted) I don’t want to plaster these walls and then find the walls are stained at a later date.
I want to achieve dry / stain free walls and been told I can achieve this by using a cavity membrane system with a plaster finish (which is a type of dry lining), overall cost not much different to lime plastering.
I have discussed this with the local Conservation Officer who has basically said NO and has said, I have to use lime.
Question...... If the CO is insistent that I use lime, despite what others have advised me, if it all goes wrong and I end up with damp stained decorations and plaster work, can I hold the CO / Council responsible. I assume that he is advising me in the position of a professional advisor and representative of the council.
After all if my surveyor gets it wrong I can sue him.
Anyone else experienced this problem?
All help / advice appreciated.
Nick
