damp specialist

I dont think this has been covered byt he recent faq thingy on damp... I was thinking of seekign advice from a specialist in damp and beetle problems.. as we seem to have a bit of everything (mushy skirting in one room, tide mark up the lovely plastic wallpaper in another, bubbling plaster in another beetle damage throughabout... signs of active beetle... the list goes on)
So - I gather that if i went htis way the best is to pay up front for and independent bod, and avoid someone who will try to flog us something.

is getting someone in necessary/ a good idea? anything else i should think of when looking for this person?

Some have done it that way, some have read and discussed and worked out what they need to do for themselves. Your choice really.

The quandary for many home owners these days is what to do with the problems that previous attempted "solutions" to damp and rot now create.
These new problems are often superimposed onto the original problem making it much more difficult to deal with successfully.
It is also a quandary for those who are asked for advice to find the "final solution".

Yes, an independent surveyor, one who isn't tied to a chemical injection and spraying company, AND who has expertise in period buidings, is what would be needed.

Try 'Seeking Specialists' on this site, or SPAB should be able to supply you with a list of firms with relevant expertise.

The trouble seems to be that many surveyors incorrectly claim to have expertise in PPs. Maybe look at those offering their services on this site. 'Seeking specialists'

ok thanks everyone. Is there a qualification or affiliated body that I shoudl look out for? or can anyone call themselves an expert? if SPAB lists them - does that come as a sort of recommendation or do they not vet them?

Some are more expert than others I am sure, but SPAB won't give you the names of cowboys.
