Help! I have a flat in a converted detached sandstone building. The gable wall is roughcast rendered and both mine and my downstairs neighbour have damp issues with this wall. This sounds obvious, remove the render and repoint in lime. BUT I've just had a damp survey done and it states that that wall was originally an internal wall as the house was originally part of a row of terraces.
Surveyor did not suggest to remove cement render but instead to replaster the internal walls in lime to allow wall to continue to dry out, however researching this it seems if the cause of the damp (presumably the non breathability of the cement render ) is not addressed the lime plaster will also stain and deteriorate.
Has anyone solved a similar situation ? or can anyone make any suggestions for how to deal with this? at the moment the internal walls are hard plastered with gypsum with dab and dot in one room (or possibly both) I was thinking a timber frame , with fermacell or other breathable alternative instead of plasterboard but not sure this will aid with drying the wall whilst cement render is there.
Really appreciate any in put!
