We've been clearing out a fitted cupboard in a ground floor room in our Edwardian house and have found bad damp which corresponds to where the iron airbrick is outside of the house. The floorboards are looking a bit rotten at the junction of the wall. What would cause this? I thought airbricks were there to prevent this?

Fitted cupboards on outside walls in Edwardian houses are prone to be damp....not a good idea.
As for the airbrick, as has been suggested, it may be channeling water into the house particularly if the outside soil or path level is high.
Airbricks have to be cleaned to allow air to flow through them and there need to be more than one of them for any air flow to take place.
I suggest you lift a floorboard to see what is happening under the floor.

It's probably the coldest place so liable to condensation.
