Dammit! Pigeons , Damn Them! Damn Them All!

A While back i was parking my saab down the bottom of the garden where my drive and garage is , i cannot use the garage as its full of stuff. Anyhow , these pidgeons done a bup bups all over the cars boot and the bup bups ate into the paint. Dammit i thought so i moved the saab to the road and put the old land rover there instead , they bup bups'd all over the landys bonnet and the bup bups ate through the paint down to the bare aluminium, dammit! i thought.

Anyhow ,Down the bottom of the garden i have a few trees , i have an oak , a big fir and lots of elders among others. Today i chopped down the elders to give the rest of the trees some breathing space and to try and thin out the small woodland i had growing down there, hopefully i will use the wood later for some wattle. I didn't think to look for nests , now , ive got an exposed pigeons nest with a single egg in it , the pigeon keeps flying off every time i go to work in the garden , Dammit! Now i have to wait three weeks ort so for the egg to hatch before i can finish my garden.

Part of me is saying ''but they bup bups'd all over both my cars and badly scared the paint work'' and part of me is saying ''but they are pigeons and will bup bups where ever they like, they didn't do it on purpose'' , damn pigeons!

Im gutted , the poor thing was sitting in the tree beside the nest and not on its egg , then it flew off. Both mum and dad are still around but i think they may have abandoned their nest.

Don't feel too bad Rob there are plenty of pigeons, and I am sure these two will have some more eggs.

Poor Rob's car - and I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about the egg. A thousand and one bad things happen during the nesting period - magpies, crows, cats, even just a change of mood - if it hadn't been you it could have been any one of those things.

Have you tried wild pigeon? It's delicious: put 'em in a pie if I were you.

I'm shooting my magpies, and trapping my foxes (with any luck) Sometimes you have to kill to protect the things you love.

the poor thing came back and tried to sit on its egg , it rolled the egg around and tried all different positions but because i removed some of the tree that the nest was resting on its too unstable to hold the birds weight , so , i have constructed an A frame from some of the elder tree cuttings and positioned it under the nest to give it some added support, you never know , at least i tried to help them.

Edit , yes poor car indeed , i love that car , damn pigeons!

I hope not Joce, it sounds silly but i would hate to think i was responsible for them losing their only egg , apparently they usually only have two.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the pigeon nest; they are hardly an endagered species. Indeed, they are officially classified as a pest and Natural England issues various 'open licences' under the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) that authorise people to kill various designated pest species (of which the Woodpigeon is most definitely one). These licences also permit eggs and nests to be destroyed.

bloomin stupid things , it came back , climbed into its nest then proceeded try to make itself comfortable and by doing so it pushed its egg out over the side of the nest. I suppose now i can get my garden done , except i found what i think is a feral cat living in a bush beside my shed.

Alas, I take your "feeling guilty for disturbing pigeons" tale and raise it one.

A couple of weeks ago I was pruning a large privet hedge that we've got in our front garden, and I noticed a rogue "plant" in the hedge - which, pulling bits out, I quickly established was a self-sown tree that was getting quite large. So there was I, merrily hacking chunks out of my hedge, when suddenly a female blackbird flew out - and she was not happy, I was getting a right telling off, even by blackbird standards! On peering in the hedge I could see a nest that I'd clearly disturbed No eggs that I could see, which is something.

She hasn't returned to the nest.


I've had to prune a very high up branch off my neighbours tree - it overhangs where I park my car, thanks to a family of woodpigeons my car was looking remarkably like it had been a victim of one of Middi's flying cows most mornings. I had to get the front wing on my old Audi re-sprayed twice due to bird poo damage - it's remarkable how corrosive it is.

it is very corrosive , i am dealing with my guilt by way of a large bottle of heineken and a bar of lindt 90% cocoa dark chocolate which should lift any feelings of guilt hopefully within the hour. Damn those pigeons !

apparently though its squirrel bup bups that you need to watch out for.

The thing that really annoys me about our resident pigeons is that they start courting the moment they are out of the nest. We have a huge lelandi tree next door but one, and it is housing several pigeons, bloomin things. They are so FAT.

I believe it's possible to buy tarpaulin covers for cars. Our urban pigeons prefer to carp on our house, but if our car suffered as much as yours do I'd be down to H*lf*rds quick-sharp.
