Dale farm apply to English Heritage for listing

Residents of the UK's largest illegal travellers' site have applied to English Heritage to gain official protection status for the scaffolding gateway at the entrance to the site.

The gateway at Dale Farm near Basildon, Essex, adorned with posters and banners, has become an "emblem of the struggle for travellers' rights", according to the applicants.

Good grief! I hope they have plenty of time on their side as it will take EH over a year to decide whether or not to come on a site visit, and then perhaps another to make a decision.

Might be interesting though....be careful what you wish for.....

Can you imagine the CO turning up to Dale Farm and pursuing an enforcement notice about the latest 'redecoration' or graffiti? Let's not stop at the scaffold and list the entire site...that might be interesting.

I don't think ( and sincerely hope) there is any section in the listing criteria that covers protest sites.

Melissa said the selection process is unbelievably strict and rigorous and she spends more time getting stuff delisted, because too much original fabric has gone, than listing new stuff.

Poor girl if she has to go there though.

And yes - controlling a "Heritage Asset" of that nature would be impossible!

A general rule that buildings less than ten years old will not be considered for listing. Those between ten and thirty years old will only be considered if they are of clear and exceptional national importance, and under threat (The Thirty Year Rule).

Even if it was listed, it wouldn't survive long. Someone would steal the metal scaffolding tubes and sell them for scrap.
There's a lot of that going on, you know. No-one knows who's doing it. It's a complete mystery, so it is.

It would be much easier to sympathise that their "travellers rights" were being denied if the protest involved the concept of going somewhere rather than staying put.

I personally would have less of a problem if it wasn't for the disgusting state that they leave the area in after they leave. We had a site in Attleborough which was left strewn with human excrement, car tires, gas bottles, glass, rubbish, food waste and several very large conifers and heaps of hedge clippings. This was cleared by the local council at considerable expense (guess who pays for that?) and I would be willing to wager large sums of cash that the money earned from their 'tree butchery' business is not subject to tax, national insurance and that they are paying business rates for waste disposal.

Particularly when many households are struggling to make ends meet, but still pay their taxes etc. this sort of 'parasitic' behaviour rankles. BTW - there are enough plots available for the illegal travellers across Essex..it's just that they have decided that they want to remain as one huge group. Does this mean that when my children grow up, they are entitled to build in my back garden without PP?

Those who support them should offer to have them live at the end of their own garden for 5 years.....

No wonder they travel. Who'd want to live amongst all that mess? Far better to toddle-off somewhere else while someone clears up all the mess so that it's all pristine again for when they return. :roll:

At a place I used to work at we arrived one morning to find several caravans in the car park. The MD called the local baliff company, who turned up and said "£500 cash if you want them gone today". £500 promptly came out of petty cash.

Baliffs walked across the car park, and told the travellers "There's £250 cash in it for you if you p*&^ off now".

They did.
