Cut nails

I have had to remove floorboards in a room. I de-nailed them and numbered them so I can put them back where they were.
I am having difficulty finding traditional cut nails- I need enough to nail 50 square meters.
Jewsons can order them, but take 6 or 7 working days. Was hoping to pick some and fix the floor by wednesday.

Also, does anyone have tips on how to deal withe the existing nail holes?
4 holes at in line with the joists show that the boards have already been removed before. Is there a way of using the original hole?

Using the original hole depends rather whether the nails were removed from the board or just ripped through it. If the latter, then you probably won't get much hold by driving a same-size nail into the hole.

I used 65mm for floorboards as with wide boards I needed very good fixings, I got them from toolstation. They do need the sharp edge remaining from where they have been punched out, they sent us some smooth ones which were worst than useless.

You could also try your local fixings companies from the yellow pages, they may well do a same or next day delivery too.

Where we re-used floorboards we mixed sawdust with glue and filled the holes.

Is screwing them with sunk screws a bad thing? Then fill in the old holes and screw holes with woodfiller and wood dust?

It's not a bad thing if it's what you want to do in your own home! Screws are certainly much easier to remove, in the event that you want to lift any boards for any reason - unless you've filled the hole and can't get to the screw head.

You should also find that screws would enable you to use the same holes as were previously used for nails. The screw head should give you a decent hold in the fairly narrow slot left by cut nails.

You can screw down, would be better to plug the holes though. You can countersink the screwhole a certain diameter and then from some offcuts of your flooring cut plugs with a plug cutter such as

They need mounting in a drill press for good results, you part drill, snap the plugs out of the hole glue them in over the screw heads, pare off with a sharp chisel and sand. If you match the grain well it hardly notices.

Lot more work, not sure it is necessary nailing would be far quicker and look traditional.

I phoned them and asked for a list of suppliers, they were very helpful, and I used a company that also supplied me with my riven oak laths and something else which I've forgotten
I can't remember the name of the company either, but if you want it I can look out the invoice.

I've been terrible ever since I had my brain virus, sometime in the past, can't remember when it was :lol:

I got the nails from a builders merchant called Chandlers.

I drilled a pilot hole first to prevent the boards from splitting. It had to be quite a large one.
As a compromise, I used two counter-sunk screws at each end of the boards because nails would split them even with a pilot hole or smaller nails.
I 'm planning to fill the holes with wood filler mixed with sawdust.
I tried using a plug cutter, but it gust shredded the board.

When hammered, the nails would tend to rotate, increasing the risk of splitting and looking messy. A carpenter showed me that this could be avoided by holding the nails with pliers. After that, all nails have been going in straight and parallel to the boards.
