"Crude" Oak Door Linings

We've just extended our 1700's cottage and are now looking at the internal fit out.

We are looking ideally to install oak door linings, with no architraves, using possibly 4-5"x3" (100-125mm x 75mm) members, to match a couple of frames within the existing building.

As anyone done something similar? I'm struggling to find any suppliers of such frames.

Any thoughts/ideas? Make my own?

Make your own, I'd say.
A hardwood supplier should be able to cut you some suitable chunks.

Or perhaps a salvage yard - I'm buying seasoned oak in size from a local yard, at £35/cubic foot.

Make your own. Even if there were someone making oak door linings for period properties, they most likely wouldn't fit your house. Green oak is cheap and easy to get hold of, and easy to work with, much easier than seasoned, and also then isn't pretending to be original.

Interesting point regarding the green oak, however, I am worried about the green oak warping. Is it likely to warp?

Green oak in door frames /linings will definitely warp. Been there got the tee shirt.

Green oak warps and shrinks: of that there is no doubt. I've learned to live with it, and rake out and repair regularly.

For major structural repairs there may be no alternative, but for door and window frames I would pay the extra for old, or seasoned, or kiln-dried, or whatever.

Hmmm, yes, suppose it will warp. I suppose seasoned might be better. What I would probably do is make the frames, get delayed and distracted on other things, and then three years later get around to making the doors, by which time the oak has hopefully settled a bit!
