I have instructed this company to clad a staircase in oak and create a gothic-style balustrade to my own design. I have experienced a number of problems with them so far, notably a lack of communication and unexplained excessive tardiness in their responses. Has anybody else experienced problems with this company? I'd be interested to hear your stories, positive or negative, particularly in relation to bespoke orders.

We had a discussion about this firm a few months ago. I did a bit of ferreting about as I thought that some people might get the impression that they sold stuff made by English woodworkers but actually were importing it from the far east. They told me on the phone that all their 'woodcarvers' were in England except one in Ireland and one in France. After the local Trading Standards officer visited them at my behest they stopped saying the stuff was English (and, allegedly, denied ever making that claim).
I've no problem with people in whatever part of the world making a living out of their wood working skills and I've no objection to world trade in general. I do have a problem with the UK importing endangered tropical hardwood species that have been illegally felled. The conversations I had with people at that company did not assure me that they were not part of this trade so I told Greenpeace about these conversations.
I wonder if you have given them a problem by specifying oak. It doesn't grow so well in the rainforest. Maybe you should have asked for mahogany.
