Punch Bowl Inn: Owners fined £20k for bulldozing historic pub

The 18th Century Punch Bowl Inn was illegally demolished despite warnings from a council.

One could feel sorry for them - the fines and costs are pretty steep - and they also have to rebuild the place "as was"! However, from the report, it is quite clear that they knew the law what they were doing and went ahead anyway. Such a case sends out a very clear message to other builders etc, which can only be good news for listed buildings.

They said they were worried it had been broken into and targeted by arsonists? And they couldn’t find a few of these ne’er do wells and bung them a bit of “encouragement” I thought that was the traditional approach.

I noticed the company had been instructed to rebuild the pub.
The cynic in me I suspects bank accounts are already empty and a bankruptcy coming up.

Such cynical disregard for law and convention always drives me up the wall. This particular one reminded me of the other recent report of a bloke who built a massive games complex on his property without planning permission and subsequently adamantly refused to comply with the legal remedies demanded.

Then there was Robert Fidler who built himself a mock Tudor monstrosity hidden behind a pile of straw bales. Once revealed to the outside world, it took the local council some ten years to enforce a demolition order.

Hasn't he just been jailed? But he is (I think) appealing so not in jail yet. It was in the news in the last two weeks
