creative room enlargement!

We've been to see the house again and don't think the staircase can be moved - there may, however, be a possibility to take out a set of built in cupboards which go into the eave space of the room - any tips on removing such a thing - it is well built with wooden jambs above and to each side.

Still can't get around this ruddy stair recess though - my perception of things is to usually make them bigger than they are (great for my husband....sorry, that was tasteless!) but this stair recess is bigger than I remember it. Not sure what we do to disguise it, even if we can make the useable room area bigger around it.

I would like to bone up on DIY possibilities and on garden design / planting. I'm not planning to become professional, but I would like to be able to have a crack at what needs doing in the house we are proposing to buy - at the moment wallpaper hanging and general digging scare me to death.

If anyone can recommend a good words of one syllable, ley person's terms manual for either activity I would be grateful.

Helena - just a tip. If you're posting a further message as part of an already existing thread, it's a help to everyone if you add it to the bottom of that existing thread (which will automatically pop up to the top of the index). That way you don't rely on people having to remember what you posted on the subject previously.
Back to your staircase. I really think that the only way you can get any good advice on whether you are able to move it would be to ask a builder (or a surveyor - much more expensive!). It's one of those things that is impossible to decide on the basis of verbal explanations. It needs a detailed set of on-site measurements and observations to make the decision.

Sorry, my original thread was so far down, I thought it better to start a new one, and then posted a response with a new topic title by accident.

Anyway, I think we've come to the conclusion that the staircase can't be move, not immediately anyway and we can get round the problem and make alternative space by removing an "under eave" cupboard, assuming that isn't too trick a job to tackle - hence my new thread.

I dont know what problem youre discussing, or anything about your oom, nor what creative might be done with the stairs, so no way I can input anything of use.

Helena - I hope this won't sound patronising, but if you aren't an expert in this kind of structural replanning, it seems to a pity to leave the unsatisfactory staircase situation as it is, without getting someone expert to have a look at it for you.
Isn't it worth getting the advice of a builder? I'm sure if you ask around among your friends and neighbours you can find one who is recommended as honest and helpful.
Speaking as someone who has moved his staircase to a new location only a few months ago, I can tell you that - in our case anyway - it has dramatically improved the layout of the house and our enjoyment of it.
