Creaky Loose Stairs.

Any top tips out there for creaky loose stairs? Is it preferable to try and replace the treads and risers or strenghten with brackets and screws etc. They are 'closed string' (I believe thats the correct terminology) and I can access them from under the cellar.

The housing in the string looks fairly shallow but hey ho they've lasted approx 150 years and only 3 or 4 out of the 37 stairs are dodgy.

If you can get easy access at the underside of treads and risers it should be relatively easy to refit or adapt new wedges to "re-lock" these in a firm position. Use glue when fitting new wedges.

It would be much better than fitting simple metal or wooden brackets screwed in position, as these are not guaranteed to stop the creaking.

First find out where the creaking is coming from. The creak I had in my old (modern construction) house was due to the stairs rubbing against the wall and had nothing to do with steps themselves. It took some careful investigation to find this out though.
