Feltwell Towers was owned for many years by the brewery that was originally behind us, and when bits to do with the (long gone) brewery come up on Ebay I tend to grab them if they take my fancy - nice to have a few bits to do with the history of the place.
Anyway, a rather odd one came up the other day which was an old wooden bottle crate. With the company name emblazoned on the side and "Wrekin Works - Wellington" on the end, I thought that cleaned up with some old bottles from the brewery inside (got a few of those!) and a piece of toughened glass on top it could make a little low side table to sit next to the sofa, somewhere to plonk my cup of tea. Not to everyone's taste I know, but we're not "fine furniture" people and have quite a bit of Victorian pine stuff, old shopfittings and the like.
Anyway, as you'd imagine it's pretty filthy, inside especially, where it's probably been sat in someone's shed for years. The outside I can probably just clean with some wax, done carefully that should keep the patina and the lettering but lift some of the dirt. Or has anyone got a better idea (that doesn't involve making kindling! )? And how about the inside, that really is a bit grotty? What will clean the (obviously unsealed) timber without raising the grain like any kind of detergent mix is likely to do?
