Crap weather for plastering

Hello

I have been trying to put on the top (setting) coat of lime plaster on my kitchen walls all weekend. The render is nice and flat and with a good key. I just can't seem to get the top coat right. The plaster dries really fast. I can do small areas, but I tried a wall about 2m x 3m and really was having troubles. I'm not am excellent plasterer or anything, but I'm guessing this hot weather is not helping. Has anyone else had this experience?

If the plaster is drying out then the substrate needs to be made more wet beforehand and I'd also supplement the finishing with a pressurised garden sprayer to keep things moist.

Spent the weekend doing just that and I've never known it to dry so fast!

I've been out this afternoon continuing the long exercise of filling the shrinkage cracks between our lime render and the 2011 green oak. By the time I'd finished one run, the other end was starting to crack. It's now all wetted down and covered and hopefully will carbonate OK. Watering the cloths every hour seems to be the rule

The areas I did over the past six weeks all seem to be in good order.

Just ready to get the first coat on my newly-restored sash frame for the morning - just as the weather breaks and thunderstorms are due

Let's hope my improvised polythene covering will do the job. It's a window that I can't get access to easily from outside - on first floor, above the single-storey scullery , which has a steeply pitched roof. It has to be finished before the weekend when the family come home, it's the window for one of the kid's bedrooms! No pressure.........

Similar job on Saturday a dormer window, I thought it would be third time lucky but the sea mist turned to drizzle instead of burning off. Never mind 4th time lucky.

Re. the lime plaster - Is this a first, someone with a problem because their walls are too dry?

try hanging some hessian in front of the wall, and keeping it damp, to slow down the lime drying
...Im doing domething similar indoors at the moment, thankfully the room is cool and dark(with hessian over the new shash windows!!)

Absolutely! I'm in week 7 of the relaxed process of filling the gaps where the green oak is shrinking. It's essential to cover the new lime for 4-5 days with hessian or similar (and to keep it damp) if the lime is to carbonate properly. I had this emphasised very strongly by the expert lady who masterminded our repairs and then "trained" me on the care and feeding of a timber framed house. I only have a limited supply of the appropriate cloth and nails (quite deliberately!).

The rain has made the job easier, because I don't have to go out and spray the cloths.
