Country houses in need of restoration

For anyone who wants to do a bit of dreaming (or has a spare £10 million) have a look in this week's Country Life magasine. They have an article on country houses at risk and in need of restoration.

Well, I thought another storming country houses at risk article by Marcus.

Of those he has featured in the past, several are being rescued now - Axwell Hall and High Head Castle are two in which I have a particular interest.

Axwell Hall rescue is now well underway - my great grandfather was the estate steward - and High Head has a rescue plan, so that's two northern ones crossed off the worry list.

Incidentally, in addition to Marcus's major article as stated above, there is a follow up by Jeremy Musson with details of two buildings rescued from wrecks and made into beautiful family homes. One of those the owner went on lime courses, etc and did a great deal of the work, to turn a group of historic wrecks into a home. The other details how they did traditional lime render on the exterior, amongst other things.

Well worth reading.

Plenty of others to try to rescue on the SAVE Buildings at Risk Register and the EH one, in Scotland there is a similar register.

A number of local authorities also compile BaR.

An owner willing to take on a neglected wreck should contact the local authority. At times having an end user will prompt the authority to begin the long process which could result in rescue.
