Cost of sash windows

We're hoping to finally ditch the placcy windows, and would very much like to replace them with double glazed wooden sash windows. I know they're certainly not cheap, but have only a vague idea of how expensive if you see what I mean ......

Can anyone give me a rough idea? Does a two over two window cost less than a six over six? Does a hardwood sash cost lots more than a softwood one?

I am aware that double glazing affects the thickness of glazing bars and therefore the 'feel' of the window, and am now wondering whether two over two might look better anyway .....

A two over two would cost less than a 6 over 6, as there would be much less work and also the panes of glass would be cheaper.
As for hardwood and softwood, it all depends on what quality you choose, Oak would be more expensive than softwood you'd buy at say B&Q, but source some high quality Douglas Fir and you can pay more than you do for the oak :wink:

My local joiner has quoted me £780 to make and fit a two over two sash to replace the one in the bedroom in the extension (which is currently pvc). I dont have the size to hand but the window is the same size as a standard edwardian single sash window you see in terraced houses.

it would have been cheaper if I had ordered a few. Most places I found wont give you a quite without coming out and none wanted to come out just for one window. You might get more competetive quotes of you are replacing lots.
