Corrugated metal sheeting

Hello,
I need to re-roof a large wooden outbuilding and replace the stuff currently on the roof as it's leaking. It looks like corrugated iron but it's a sort of fibre if that makes sense. Anyway it's horrid so I want to replace it with a more traditional galvanised corrugated sheeting. It's quite large about 20' x 10' I'd say. I have no idea where to buy a good quality (but not horrendously expensive) crinkly tin in the Devon/Dorset/Somerset area. Nor do I know anything about re-roofing

Any advice about what to buy and where to buy it would be welcomed? Many thanks, Vicky

You say the current roof is a fibre. It could be asbestos cement roof, very low asbestos content but something to be aware of. My shed roof is the same.

Builders merchants or farm supply shop should stock tin roofing

If not asbestos cement sheets, the roof sheets might be 'coroline' sheets.

As has been said before a farm supplier might be worth a try. Mole valley farmers maybe. I have a large wood framed shed made of the stuff. Been there at least 40years I'd say. The wood has rotted and been replaced over the years but the sheets are holding up well.

Hi Vicky,
There are many suppliers around who can supply galvanised steel corrugated sheets and can be found easily with a Google search or on eBay, quite a few will also deliver - for a fee of course. The sheets are not cheap though, a common size 2.44 mtrs x .8 mtrs, runs out at about £35 each. Other sizes are available and of course the price will vary with the dimensions but if you're planning to do the work yourself you will need to think about accessories including ridge cappings, fixing nails/screws, etc. but most importantly how to cut the stuff to size - its not easy.

Coroline seems to run out at about £13 for a 2.0 mtrs x .9 mars sheet and can be cut with a saw so a much cheaper option.

The black fibre stuff looks good, and is quieter inside when it rains, but in my experience needs much more frequent support timbers.
Corrugated iron will happily span 6 feet especially if mid-way along a 12 foot span, but I've had the fibre kind sagging over time with only 2 foot spans.
I think it's really only suitable for quite steeply-pitched roofs where the water runs off quickly. If rain runs off slowly more moss grows, which increases the weight and the dampness, and I notice it softens appreciably with prolonged damp.

It's not really fit-and-forget like corrugated iron. Moss needs raking off periodically to reduce weight and leaking from moss/water build-up, and in its softened state it is vulnerable to over-enthusiastic raking.
If you are not so concerned about appearance and noise I'd fit corrugated iron.

CliffordPope I had that problem on an old shed. It was supported quite frequently but ended up sagging. Someone I spoke to said that it should have ply underneath then the corregated stuff on top. Makes sense I suppose.

It's noticeably damp underneath - not leaking or dripping, but clearly permeable to moisture. I'd want an air gap underneath, not sitting straight on plywood.
