We have recently moved to a 400 year old thatched cottage and are novices at period properties.
In a corner of the main room is a chimney that is in a dangerous condition and needs to be rebuilt. Under the chimney, the corner of the room is just a blank diagonal wall. While the chimney is being restored, we thought it might be nice to reinstate a fireplace underneath, perhaps with a wood burning stove.
While we might get some clues on what was originally there once we remove the wall, does anyone have any idea what an original corner fireplace might have looked like, or even why it was in a corner? The next room has a traditional inglenook fireplace.
