so , whats your views on copper rainwater goods on period houses? in the right setting i think it looks fantastic myself.

I agree it looks nice - but very few of those pics are of period properties; most of them are new buildings or new buildings in a traditional style. Nothing looks like it is listed - so I presume either the CO or the cost (from £13 per metre!) puts people off?

To me, it's shouting "Hello, I'm Copper Guttering! Don't look at the roof, the windows or doors - look at me!" This is probably a radical departure from my norm, but I think it's gilding the lily a bit.

If I had it I'd want it to go green and crusty as soon as possible to be in the background a bit more.

I can't see it being right for a thatched cottage. As Joce says, it's a bit 'in your face'. I've no idea of the historical use of copper guttering, so I could be completely wrong, but it seems a bit like 'Georgian' electrical fittings to me.

It certainly looks like that in the photos on robgil's linked website. But some friends of ours in France have copper rainwater goods that have been in place for a few years, and have weather down very successfully. They haven't gone green - just a dull bronzy colour, which doesn't shout at all. I rather like them.

But, as with so many such aesthetic decisions, it all depends on the style of the house and the preference of the owner*.



*Unless the house is listed, in which case - obviously - the CO will have to pronounce.

i think copper rainwater goods is a more recent thing. i too think the shiny copper is just a tad shiny but i do like it when its dulled down to a nice brown colour.
i guess the pros are its light , it wont rust , its robust and maintenance free , the cons , or at least one of them is the price.

That would be my worry too.
There was some copper used in the past but not often because of the expense.
It has a very long life span.
However, lead was the preferred material.
